The Democratic Convention Starts Tonight

Posted by: BookGirl on: August 25, 2008

The Democratic National Convention is going on in Denver, Colorado starting tonight and I’m really interested to see how this post-Olympics politicalfest pans out.

Michelle Obama is scheduled to speak, which I think is so indicative of the way Obama views his talented wife. He chose her to kick off the night because he doesn’t just see her as a prop in pearls. He values her brain and is confident enough in her abilities to use her at a crucial time. That’s so encouraging, especially after Lib exposed a study that suggests men like less successful women. Talk about giving me hope…

…anyway…

I’ll be watching tonight and I’m going to start volunteering at the Obama campaign offices in my county this week. It’s the proverbial “go time” and this election, I can’t afford to let others do my part. Full NYT article on the kick off HERE.

How did “Our Lady Of Perpetual Anger” get out of the mental ward for this circus.

Harddriller:
Who me, or Michelle? lol.

Hope she has cleaned up her act and does not make an ill fatal comment like “for the first time”!!

DP:

The Obamas have a very high learning curve. She won’t be repeating that mistake tonight, I reckon. I think she’s going to shine. Valid fear though.

I don’t really think it should matter what she does. Since when was a presidents’ viability as a candidate hinge upon the speaking ability of his wife?

leapsecond:

Personally, I don’t think a presidential candidate should be damaged by his or her spouse unless the spouse is prominently displayed in the campaign (think Bill Clinton, Elizabeth Edwards, and at one point, Michelle Obama). That said, I do think traditionally, women who have supported their politician husbands have been marginalized as background cutouts with pearl necklaces. I am pleased to see that ivy-league educated Michelle does not have to settle for a role as a blinking prop. She is intelligent and articulate in her own right, and it’s very promising that Obama is ok with letting his wife shine. I think it marks progress for spouses in politics.

Thanks for your comment.

Agreed, and you’re very welcome. The problem is, the more Michelle opens her mouth, the more she’s apt to fault — which will help McCain’s cause. I don’t question her intelligence or her ability to speak at all, but I just think that if she messes up, she and her husband’s campaign will get blasted. I don’t think it’s fair, but the GOP is playing hardball like that, and it could hurt the Obama campaign.

I have watched the PBS coverage and am disappointed in the process so far.

Pelosi was a poor choice to speak, divisive ( I. is not on the table).

Anything and anyone is better than Hillary Clinton, who has managed to repulse me at all sorts of levels.

I am dredging my memory trying to place the former candidates wives in some context but am drawn back to the question: what the heck difference does it make if the wife speaks well or not- she is not running for office.

Be honest, the DNC is a cheap side show compared to the wrap-up of the Olympics in China, which pulled all stops, and did everything but blow people up on wires over head and pop a nuke over the “bird nest”.

leapsecond:

I am honestly more worried about Biden, to tell you the truth. HE has a big problem with gaffes. Nevertheless, I watched her speech carefully and she did a great job. I liveblogged it HERE.

Thanks again!

Bat:

I can agree the closing ceremonies by the Chinese were a well-orchestrated propaganda fest and the Democratic convention is turning out to be a less finely tuned propaganda fest.

I reiterate that the spouse of the candidate is important, especially because they give insight into who the candidate is as a person. It’s probably not something that a lot of guys view as important, but as a female voter, hearing from the potential first lady is something I require.

I live blogged Pelosi’s speech HERE. I had a lot of fun with that one because I think it was really terrible. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for your comment. :)
