Former Senator Jesse Helms Dead at 86

Not everybody liked republican senator Jesse Helms. All I really knew about him was that he’d spearheaded a law that clamped down on Fidel Castro’s regime (La ley Helms-Burton in spanish).  Apparently, his influence has spanned over 50 years and has shaped the conservative side of politics in ways akin to Reagan.

To my fellow argumentative, opinionated, sarcastic, inquisitive, ball busting, Americans.  Happy Independence Day!  This is one of my favorite holidays because it reminds us that our nation was born with the promise of freedom through triumph over extreme adversity.  I am proud to be an American.
