The Miami Herald featured an article about a man named Rafid Ahmed Alwan which reveals his past life as an Iraqi informant. His code name: Curveball.
Curveball was one of the men the Bush Administration depended on to supply intelligence that led us on our steady march towards Baghdad. According to the article, Curveball was the “credible source” referenced when the Bush Administration said Sadaam had “weapons of mass destruction”. Though he negates ever using that term, he did tell them Sadaam had “germ factories”. The world knows now that information proved false.
Still, Colin Powell referenced Curveball’s lies when he went before the UN Security Council, according to the article.
How could they fall for this? Perhaps it’s due to naivete.
Or perhaps they just failed to do their homework out of laziness. It seems everyone the reporters talked to about Alwan was quick to point out he was a liar and that he was “corrupt”.
A co-worker of his from Burger King where he worked (in Germany where he now lives) even said “He always lied.”
If a guy that is flipping burgers can realize that Alwan is a truth fudger, then how could our trained intelligence committee not realize his deceptive character?
I think it’s because the Bush Administration didn’t want to realize it because it would mean there was no concrete reason to go to war.
President Bush had a goal and so did his subordinates. They had a plan to invade Iraq and they just needed some semblance of intelligence to prove their case. They just had to go through the motions to appease people.
They relied on their lies, exaggerations, and propaganda to get the job done. People like Alwan, codename “Curveball” were just puppets.
He was used just the same as we were. We could blame him for being a liar, for capitalizing on a moment that made him feel important. Or we could vote against the regime and party that failed to protect us from a lying Iraqi, the true people to blame for this horrible international blunder.
We have to prove we are no longer puppets.

I’ve never trusted this administration. Still, the series I’ve linked to up above is addressing part of an international gag-order on billions of stolen dollars from the most egregious war-profiteering the world has seen. The BBC has been covering this story.
I haven’t seen it in the papers yet, although I admit I tend to read only the things that pique my curiosity.
I guess at a certain point, the statement that we’re being lied to may come across as if we’re thinking that someone is stupid. It’s now just a matter of how much worse than we could’ve imagined are the actual damages?
