John McCain Witheld Critical Vote

Posted by: BookGirl on: April 5, 2008

John McCain, who has missed more than half of his Senate votes, refrained from voting on March 13, 2007. Why was this date important?

It was the date senators were taking a stand on a resolution that called for the redeployment of troops by March 31, 2008. The resolution also called for President Bush to have to answer to our Congress and provide a progress report on the War.

It was voted down by a slim margin: 48-50.

Two senators did not vote that day. One of them was Tim Johnson, a democrat from South Dakota. The other one was John McCain.

Tim Johnson is the South Dakota senator who had a brain hemorrhage in December 2006. He has since returned to his post, but he has a valid reason for missing the vote. That means John McCain was the only able bodied senator to remain silent.

John McCain is running for office right now on the premise that he is a supporter of the war. His absence from the vote shows two things: one, he chose to stop a resolution to end the conflict and two, he didn’t feel strongly enough about the war to show up to defend it in the Senate chamber.

Missing a vote on what is perhaps the most important issue in the United States is unacceptable from someone who plans on running the country.

John McCain needs to explain where he was during this vote and others he has missed with regards to Iraq. It seems McCain is not only inheriting Bush’s foreign policy, he’s the heir to Bush’s self-serving lassitude.

Shame on you for making me assist McCain but, if the “resolution” failed it means he didn’t have to show up to defeat it…right?? Of course.

Please, read and fully appreciate the message of these two links to learn the lessons our own history teaches us;

Thank you.

Winghunter:

If that’s the best defense he’s got, it’s not good enough.

Even if the vote was defeated, he still should have taken a stand. His job in the senate is to vote. If he’s not voting, he’s not doing his job.

I’m anti-Iraq so I don’t agree with his view. I am not advocating the war nor am I in need of a history brush up. I am well aware of the similarities between Iraq and Vietnam.

I believe McCain should have used that vote as a chance to assert himself and defend his position. The American people should know what his thought process is. When I said “self serving lassitude” I meant his non-vote can be interpreted as indifference. Being indifferent on such an important resolution is not acceptable of a presidential candidate.

Thanks.
