It’s called “The Right to Bear Arms”. And no, they aren’t talking about wearing tank tops.
In the District of Columbia V. Heller, the fundamental right of Americans to own handguns is being debated. Washington D.C. does not allow for the private ownership of handguns. Security guard Dick A. Heller decided to challenge he city in the courts.
The Supreme Court listened to the two sides yesterday and although a ruling hasn’t been decided yet, it is being watched very closely.
Essentially they’re debating if guns are only for state militias or if the rights apply to individuals as well.
Whatever the Court rules could set off a chain reaction all over the country.
New York Times has an article HERE.
I don’t feel simply banning handguns is enough to stop the violent behaviors that lead to tragedy. There is an underlying angst in our society today that can only be quelled by intervention and education.
My take: The Supreme Court should protect people’s Second Amendment Rights, meaning rule against D.C.’s ban, but should provide reasonable provisions for local and state governments to regulate things like machine guns.
Reasonable and modern regulation is necessary, but removal of the right is unacceptable.
UPDATE: Over at the Washingtonpost.com website they show graphs of homicide statistics in Washington D.C. since the hand gun ban was introduced in the 1970s. Can I just say, holy crap D.C. is a violent place to live!
